Rahul is sixth Cong president from the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty
NEW DELHI, Dec 11 (Agencies): Rahul Gandhi, who was elevated to the post of Congress President on Monday, was the sixth from the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. Rahul has been elected unopposed to the post and has taken over the party reins from his mother Sonia Gandhi, who was at the helm for 19 years. Of the 15 people who led the 132-year-old party post-independence, six people belonged to the Gandhi-Nehru dynasty. When Rahul takes over as the president on December 16, he will be the fifth Congress president post-independence and sixth pre-independence. The Nehru-Gandhi clan was at the helm of affairs of the party after independence for 38 years. Nehru for three years, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi for eight years each, and Sonia Gandhi for a record 19 years. The 47-year-old Gandhi will foll...

Jaitley tears into 'myths' of Cong's poll plank in latest social media post
NEW DELHI, Dec 9 (Agencies): Even as Gujarat voted in the first phase of the 2107 Assembly elections, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley tore into the Conrgess's campaign in the state. In a lengthy social media post, Jaitley critiqued what he called the 'myths' underlying the poll strategy of the grand old party. "The two important limbs of the Congress manifesto comprise of one - a constitutional impossibility - and the other - a fiscal impossibility. The Congress Party can well afford this risk since its victory is a political improbability," said Jaitley in his post targeting a number of the Congress's key poll planks in Gujarat. Jaitley dismissed the Congress campaign as disconnected from the ground realities, claiming the party had sidelined its own state level leadership. He sai...

RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 6%, reverse repo at 5.75%
MUMBAI, Dec 6 (Agencies): Deterred by inflationary concerns, the Reserve Bank on Wednesday kept the policy rate unchanged leaving little scope for banks to lower interest rates on housing and auto loans. It raised the inflation estimate to 4.3-4.7%, from the earlier projection of 4.2-4.6%, for the second half of the current financial year. However, it retained the growth forecast at 6.7% for 2017-18 even through the gross value added (GVA) in the second quarter rose to 6.3%. The 6-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), headed by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel, in its 5th bi-monthly review in the current fiscal, kept repo rate unchanged at 6% and reverse repo at 5.75%. It said the reason for the decision was "achieving the medium-term target for consumer price index ...

Another faux pas? Rahul deletes tweet with wrong maths against Modi, posts new one
NEW DELHI, Dec 5 (Agencies): About three hours after Congress Vice-President posted his seventh question to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the tweet was deleted. A fresh post came up on twitter with the same words, but a new image. Turns out, the maths was all wrong in the previous tweet. In the previous tweet (above image), the percentage column – a matter of simple maths – contained wrong and inflated figures. The fresh tweet now says: BJP leaders were quick to point it out. "His questions are clumsily phrased. I don't know who drafts his questions? On what basis does he ask those questions? They either don't understand data or represent it wrongly, as per their convenience. All the data is baseless," said Jitendra Singh, Minister of State at Prime Minister's Office. The Congress l...
