Fuel prices hit 55-month high; Petroleum ministry may approach FinMin for excise duty cut
New Delhi, Apr 23 (Agencies) : Petrol and diesel prices touched 55-month high on Monday, renewing calls for a cut in excise duty to ease the burden on consumers. Sources told Zee Media that the government held meeting with chief of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and reviewed daily pricing mechanism for petrol and diesel. The Petroleum ministry is also believed to be evaluating global price trend and the impact of daily pricing of fuel with OMCs. State-owned oil firms have been revising auto fuel prices daily since June last year. Under the dynamic pricing scheme, petrol and diesel prices are revised on a daily basis in sync with global crude oil prices. 76% Indians want death penalty for child rapists: Survey
New Delhi, Apr 23 (Agencies) : A day after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his nod to an ordinance confirming death penalty for those convicted for raping minors, a citizen survey has now shown that nearly 76 percent of the people agree with it. The survey, which was conducted by NGO LocalCircles, saw nearly 18 percent of the respondents voting in favour of life imprisonment without parole for convicted rapists while three percent said that they (child rape convicts) should be given a seven-year jail term (which is the current law). Central Railway to run 10 'Summer Special' trains between Mumbai and Varanasi
MUMBAI, Apr 20 (Agencies): The Central Railway has announced that it would run 10 'Summer Special' trains between Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Varanasi from April 24. News agency ANI reported that the weekly trains would run between the two cities between April 24 and May 23. Passengers can book a seat by paying a special fare. The decision to run these trains comes due to increased demand - especially during the holiday season. US Admiral warns against sanctioning India over Russia defence purchase
US, Apr 19 (Agencies): A top US admiral has warned Congress against imposing any sanctions on countries like India and Indonesia for purchasing defence equipment from Russia, saying any such move would pose a concern for America's defence ties in the Indo-Pacific and increase its partners' dependence on Moscow.
