NEW DELHI, Mar 30: The government's Council for Science and Technology Research (CSIR) director general Shekhar C Mande has promised to shortly come out with a paper test kit for checking the caronavirus in five to ten minutes and that too in just Rs 100.
Presently, the test takes a minimum of six hours and costs a minimum of Rs 4,500, a reason why the government is putting to test only the confirmed patients.
The new kit is being developed by the scientists of CSIR's Delhi-based Institute of Genomic & Integrative Biology, Mande said, noting that this kit can be used at any place and not in the designated environments.
In reply to a question, he said COVID-19 may lose its lethal effect after sometime because the people develop "herd immunity" against the disease. But it can infect large number of people in the meanwhile, he said, pointing out that the immunity comes when 50-60 per cent population has faced the virus.
Mande said the lockdown is the most effective way to break the chain of spread of the disease. Right now the patients in the country are being identified as those from outside India have been already stopped. Once all patients are treated, the spread of coronavirus will end.
Once the chain is broken, the danger from this virus will be escaped but still caution will be needed for months to ensure it does not revive, he added.
