Dr A M Matoo passes away, laid to rest; Death widely mourned

SRINAGAR, Mar 30: Dr Ali Mohammad Matoo, the brother-in-law of National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah, was laid to rest at Ziarat Bahauddin Ganj Baksh graveyard here.
Dr Matoo passed away at his Gupkar residence here after prolonged illness last night. He was the husband of Dr Suraya Matoo and father of Dr Nyla Ali Khan.
Dr Matoo's Nimaz-e-Jinaza was held this morning followed by the burial.
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah broke the news of the death of his uncle on Twitter last night and urged people not to visit the bereaved family for condolence as a precautionary measure to prevent spread of coronavirus.
Meanwhile, NC spokesperson in a statement condoled the demise. “Dr Ali Muhammad Matoo was the son of renowned businessman of his times Khwaja Muhammad Abdullah Matoo of Zainakadal who was a close associate of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah,” he said.
Matoo has served as superintendent at SMHS Hospital and SKIMS. “A man of knowledge, he was known for his humble disposition and cheerful nature. A dignified and upright person, Matoo sahib embodied nobility, dignity and grace. The party rank and file is in unison with the grief stricken family in particular, with the wife of deceased Prof. Suriya Matoo Abdullah and his daughter Dr. Nyla Ali Khan.” The party expressed condolences to the party president and Member of Parliament from Srinagar Dr Farooq Abdullah and vice-president Omar Abdullah.
Prominent people from different walks of life have also condoled the death.
