NEW DELHI, Apr 7: The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha secretariats on Tuesday gazetted new rates of allowances of Rs 1.03 lakh per month to the members of Parliament (MPs), making a mockery of the Cabinet decision only a day earlier for 30% pay cut to them in view of the coronavirus that amounts to Rs 15,000 per month.
The government spends Rs 2.7 lakh per month on an MP by way of salary and allowances that includes the constituency allowance which has been raised to Rs 49,000 per month and another allowance for office expenses that has been now raised to Rs 54,000, including Rs 14,000 per month for stationery and postage. Both these revised allowances shall be effective for one year from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021, according to the gazette notifications issued on January 7 as per the decision of the Joint Committee of Houses of Parliament.
A government spokesman tried the justify the hike in the two allowances to the MPs, stating that the Cabinet had given a 55% hike in allowances to the MPs on February 28, but the announcement was held up since salary and allowances of the MPs are decided by a Joint Committee of Houses of Parliament.
