Top JeM commander killed in Sopore encounter

SRINAGAR, Apr 8: A top militant commander was killed in an encounter with government forces at Arampora area of Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramullah district on Wednesday, official reports said.
Gunfight according to reports broke out this morning following fourteen hour long siege laid by the joint team of army, police and CRPF at Arampora village of Sopore town late last evening following tipoff about the presence of militants.
A Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander was killed during an encounter with government forces at Armapora area of Sopore. The slain militant has been identified as Sajad Nawab Dar of Saidapora Sopore who according to police was active since 2018.
“JeM commander Sajad Nawab Dar got neutralized in ongoing encounter at Sopore. Further details to follow,” tweeted Jammu and Kashmir police as soon as the killing of JeM commander was confirmed.
A joint team of army, CRPF and police cordoned off Gulabad Arampora area of Sopore town late last evening following specific inputs about the presence of militants. Encounter according to reports broke out this morning after government forces zeroed in the spot where militants were hiding.
As the forces intensified the searches, the hiding militants opened fire, which was accordingly retaliated leading to encounter.
Residential house wherein militants were hiding also damaged after catching fire following massive shelling by the government forces.
All the entry and exit points were sealed by the government forces and flood lights installed to prevent militants from escaping the area taking advantage of darkness.
Officials said the encounter ended with killing of JeM commander, Sajad Nawab Dar and the area is now being sanitized. Dar according to reports was involved in recruiting youth into militant rank and was wanted for his involvement in number of cases.
