EC action today on BJP's victory advt in Assam papers

NEW DELHI, Mar 30: The Election Commission on Tuesday assured a Congress delegation to summon a report from its observers in Assam on all state newspapers carrying a front-page BJP advertisement as a banner news on its victory in all elections in the first phase of poll in Upper Assam and it would take a decision by Wednesday.
The delegation told the EC that the said advertisement is "totally illegal and contrary to Section 126 of the Representation of People's Act as also the Election Commission's own circular that prohibit dissemination of any prediction even by third parties, astrologers, taro readers or political analysts."
It sought action on the BJP seeking to disseminate the result by predicting the result, which is in total violation.
Congress leaders Devdutt Kamath and Rajeev Shukla told reporters after submitting two memorandums to the EC to take action immediately against Assam Minister HimantaBiswaSarma openly intimidating and treatening the Congress alliance partner, Bodoland People's Front, to get their leaders arrested through the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
"It is clearly an attempt to seek help of the central agency in the ongoing Assam Assembly elections, which is totally prohibited as also an offence under the Indian Penal Act (IPC) and the Representation of People's Act. Kamat said the EC assured to call for a report from the minister as well as from its own observers and take action.
