NEW DELHI, Jul 16: The astronomers from the world over are struggling on explain the curious occurrence of nine stars that keep appearing and vanishing.

The scientists from across the countries collaborating to study the phenomenon include Dr Alok C Gupta, a scientist from Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital (Uttarakhand), who participated in a study recently published in Nature's "Scientific reports."

He said the scientists are still exploring the reasons behind the observation of these strange transient stars and are still not sure about what triggered their appearance and disappearance. “The only thing we can say with certainty is that these images contain star-like objects that should not be there. We do not know why they are there,” he said.

ARIES is an autonomous institution of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

Dr Gupta said the scientists examined the photographs of he night sky captured on the glass plates since April 1950 and detected these transient stars which were not to be found after half an hour, nor traced since then. Such a group of objects appearing and disappearing at the same time has been detected for the first time in the history of astronomy, he said.
