NEW DELHI, Jul 31: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday hailed Prime Minister Modi for doing so much for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), including the decision early this week to provide them 27% reservation in the medical and dental colleges and an additional 10% to the economically weaker sections (EWSs).

Senior party leader and union minister Bhupender Yadav told a Press conference here that the Centre had taken several steps for the welfare of the OBCs and the constitutional recognition given to the National Commission for Backward Classes through an amendment in 2018 was a singular contribution of the Prime Minister to give the OBCs the right to live with dignity

He, however, skipped a question on why 10% reservation to the EWS is limited to the narrow central quota in the state medical and dental colleges and not extended for admissions in the entire gamut of the higher education.

He also underlined how Modi has given wide representation to dalits, adivasis, backwards, OBCs and women in a cabinet reshuffle early this month which made 27 OBCs as the ministers while 20 ministers hail from the SC/ST communities and 11 are women.

Yadav accused the Congress of stalling the issues of the OBC interests for long time while being in power and it did nothing from the economically weaker sections who have now got 10% reservation in the medical admissions. He credited the Modi government to implement the principles enunciated by Baba Saheb Ambedkar.

He also referred to the Prime Minister's "Mantra" of "Subka saath, subka vikas and sabka vishwas" and "ease of living" to usher in a society free from discrimination to ensure the basic facilities soon and at cheaper rates to the backwards. He said every scheme, every programme of the Modi government is focused on the poor, weaker and backward sections of the society.

Referring to the revolutionary changes brought by the Prime Minister in the medical education, Yadav credited him for always giving the priority to the social justice. He also referred to free coaching and pre-matric scholarship to SC and OBC candidates and benefits to the backwards, SCs, STs and women in all government scheme, be it the PM Awas Yojana, Ayushman Bharat programme, Jan Dhan, Ujjawala and many other schemes.
