Whopping jump in Covid cases & deaths

NEW DELHI, Aug 25: India on Wednesday logged in a whopping jump in both the Covid-19 cases and deaths, with even the active cases going up after the continuous drop for 10 days.

The Health Ministry data at 8 AM showed 37,593 new infections, which is a big jump of 47.6% over the previous day's 25,467 whereas the day's fatalities shot up hugely to 646 from Tuesday's 354 and the active cases increased by 2,776 to hit 3,22,327 cases.

Just a day after the Onam festival, Kerala reported a record number of 24,296 new cases, followed by Maharashtra 4,355 cases, Tamil Nadu 1,585, Karnataka 1,259 and Andhra Pradesh 1,248. Gujarat (with 14 fresh cases), Rajasthan (10), Bihar (9) and Madhya Pradesh (5) were among the states reporting zero Covid deaths. Delhi reported 151 fresh cases, but zero deaths in the last six days.

Maharashtra reported the highest 288 fatalities in a day, followed by 173 in Kerala and 67 in Odisha. The cumulative death count in Delhi stands at 25,079 and the fatality rate at 1.74%. Neighbouring Uttar Pradesh had 26 fresh cases and two deaths in a day.

The cumulative total of the Covid-19 infections in the country reached 32.51 million, though 31.75 million of them recovered with 97.67% recovery rate while 4,35,756 succumbed to death so far.

The testing of the Coronavirus disease totalled 51.12 crore, with 17.92 lakh tested in the past 24 hours whereas the Vaccination reached nearly 60 crore or to be exact 59.95 crore, with 61.91 lakh doses administered in 24 hours.

WORLD VIEW: The global Coronvirus caseload has topped 213 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 4.45 million and vaccinations soared to over 4.99 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
