NEW DELHI, Mar 03: Chief Justice of India N V Ramana was on Thursday annoyed over a PIL for evacuation of the Indian students from the war-hit Ukraine, saying the courts can't do anything in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
"Can I give directions to the President of Russia to stop the war," he asked when the PIL was mentioned before his Bench for early hearing even while agreeing to take it up later in the day.
"On social media, I saw some videos saying what is CJI doing! We sympathise with them, but what can the Court do," the CJI asked. As the counsel contesting for the PIL said, "People are freezing on the Romanian border. They have to take care", the CJI said, "Who has to take care? The government is already doing. We will ask the AG to find out."
Later in the day, he sought help of Attorney General K K Venugopal to use his office to evacuate the stranded medical students near the Roimanian border.
"Flights are being operated from Poland and Hungary and not from Romania. The students, which also included many girls, are stuck without any facility," the lawyer told the bench, also comprising Justices A S Bopanna and Hima Kohli.
