| | Security beefed up ahead of R-Day | | | SRINAGAR, Jan 23: The Srinagar city has been placed under a blanket of security cover ahead of the Republic Day. Thousands of armed personnel have been deployed to keep a tight vigil on the main roads, particularly around Bakshi stadium.
Vehicles entering Srinagar city, from both-Northern and Southern districts of Kashmir valley -are being thoroughly checked by the state police and CRPF personnel in outskirts.
Security has been particularly tightened on the roads leading to the main venue Bakshi stadium. The security forces have kept mobile bunkers and created temporary barricades at dozens of places in civil lines areas and in old Srinagar city where, passenger vehicles, auto rickshaw and two wheelers are being checked.
The security personnel are also using the services of sniffer dogs and anti explosive devices. However, there is no report of any recovery from these searches.
CCTV cameras have been installed at vital installations including around the Bakshi stadium to monitor the situation and prevent any untoward incident from taking place.
The cameras have been also installed at Jehangir Chowk, Dalgate, Regal Chowk, Batamaloo and few other vital places in the city.
The commuters and pedestrians are complaining of inconvenience because of the frisking by security forces in the chilly weather. “It took us one and half hour to complete a journey that would otherwise take one hour in Sumo because of the security checking at different places,” said Abdul Majid, 35, a resident of south Kashmir's Pulwama district who works in a government office in Srinagar city.
Residents of Haft Chinar, Shergarhi, Aloochi Bagh, Solina, Wazir Bagh and Jawahar Nagar have to face tough times during the days The people living in these areas are the worst hit and they heave a sigh of relief once the parade is over.
Official sources said that additional security deployment has been made in and around the city in the wake of intelligence inputs and possible threat of militant attacks. |
