Oil tanker driver ‘murdered’
3 arrested, tankers go on indefinite strike

SRINAGAR/ JAMMU, July 3: Police has arrested three persons in connection with the alleged murder of an oil tanker driver whose body was found in Qazigund area of south Kashmir on June 30. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Oil Tankers Association (JKOTA) went on an indefinite strike across Jammu and Kashmir from today demanding action against those involved in the murder.
Ajay Sharma alias Akshay Kumar of Sunderbani- Rajouri after driving a diesel tanker to Srinagar on June 21 went missing from Pulwama area. His tanker was found in Pulwama on June 30 and the same day his body was recovered from Qazigund.
Sources said that Qazigund police after recovering the body of the tanker driver registered FIR under various sections including 379, 302 and 407 and started investigations into the matter.
“During investigations police arrested three persons, two from Athwajan Srinagar and one hailing from Banihal. All of them are lodged in police station Pulwama where they are being interrogated,” said the police sources.
They said the fourth and the main accused in the case Muzaffar Ahmad is absconding.
“Muzaffar was driving the tanker when police stopped and seized it in Pulwama area on June 30, however he himself managed to flee,” said the sources.
SHO, Qazigund, Tariq Ahmad Tak, told Kashmir Times that 70 percent of the case has been solved.
“We are going to shift the custody of the three accused from police station Pulwama to police station Qazigund in next couple of days after which we are hopeful of solving the case with all the evidences,” the police officer said.
Jammu and Kashmir Oil Tankers Association (JKOTA) went on an indefinite strike across Jammu and Kashmir from Tuesday, demanding action against those involved in the suspicious death of a tanker driver in Kashmir valley.
President of the association, Anna Sharma, said “The tanker was found in Pulwama, about 35 km from Srinagar, but Akshay was missing.” He added that that the owner of tanker Surinder Singh from Jammu went there to lodge a report with police but police was not co-operative at all instead it kept dilly dallying.
"We demand arrest of the killers of oil tanker driver, whose body was found with throat slit in Kashmir," he added.
"Tanker drivers should be provided with security but the government despite many reminders and promises failed to provide us security," Sharma asserted.
The strike will continue till the time people involved in the murder are arrested, he threatened.
Over 200 drivers today held protest demonstration in Jammu and raised anti-government slogans demanding arrest of the culprits and strict action against them. They also demanded compensation to the family of the slain drive and safety for tanker drivers going to Kashmir valley. The demonstrators said their indefinite strike will continue till the culprits are found and strict action taken against them.
The JKOTA operates nearly 1,800 oil tankers in Jammu and Kashmir ferrying petrol, diesel and kerosene to different parts of the state.
