| | KP migrants’ relief enhancement: Displaced youth dissatisfied but suspend protest | | | JAMMU, Jan 30: After the enhancement of relief assistance per family by the Government of India (GoI) for Kashmir migrant community, the annoyed leaders of Kashmiri Migrant Relief Holders and Over Aged Youth, today suspended their strike for one month. They were sitting on dharna for the last several months demanding enhancement in monthly relief assistance upto Rs. 10,000. The demand had been forwarded to Central Government for its approval by the state government.
However, the activists on dharna were disappointed by Government of India for enhancing only relief by only Rs. 400 per person and burnt the approval order copies in front of Relief Commissioner’s Office.
NC MLC Vijay Bakaya also visited the dharna spot to pacify the annoyed leaders regarding the enhancement of relief assistance and appreciated the state and central governments for its approval in favour the community during the period of inflation. He further assured the community leaders to put forth the earlier demand of the community for approval of Rs, 10,000 relief assistance.
While addressing the gathering, Bakaya said, “Since 1990, it is upto the GoI who has authority to enhance the relief assistance on the recommendation of State Government but we have always sent our recommendation taking care of community demands and sentiments regarding any issue as the state government has already sent its approval for Rs. 10, 000 per family.”
The leaders also asked Bakaya to arrange a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah regarding the enhancement and to discuss other pending issues.
Showing their resentment over the enhancement, the displaced youth leaders said, “We have only suspended our strike for one month only not called off the strike. The fight will be continue till our demands are not fulfilled regarding the enhancement to Rs. 10,000. We are not satisfied with the enhancement of Rs. 400 per person. Since 1990, both state and central governments have treated the community as third class citizens and never treated us as Indian citizens.”
They further said, “This time we had tremendous hopes that out burning problems will be genuinely taken care of by the J&K Government and GoI by coming out with real healing touch by enhancing the relief handsomely so that we could cope up with the price rise but unfortunately the hopes have been dashed with the paltry hike which is nothing then a cruel joke with the community.”
The leaders further appealed to the chief minister to take up the matter with GoI and threatened to launch an agitation if their demands are not met.
Earlier, various Kashmiri migrant organizations including Apex Committee members for migrants’ relief and rehabilitation today assembled near the dharna site and raised slogans against the state and Central government for not fulfilling their demands put forth by the community regarding enhancement of monthly relief assistance from Rs. 5000 to Rs.10, 000 as recommended by the state government for its approval to GoI. |
