Monsoon delays | Deficient rainfall in Jammu
KT NEWS SERVICE
JAMMU, Jul 3: Amid soaring mercury, the delayed Monsoon has caused the probability of deficient rainfall in Jammu region this year.
Contrary to early predictions about the arrival of Monsoon by July 5 in J&K, the weathermen predict its late arrival given its slow progress towards northern states of India. According to the weathermen, the south-western winds have already delayed vis-à-vis their normal schedule.
However, the deficient rainfall in the months of May and June has already led to speculations about a drought spell, thus weakening the expectations of normal monsoon this year.
The region received only 9 mm rainfall in the month of May and 11 mm rainfall in the month of June this year as compared to 24 mm and 89.3 mm average rainfall received in May and June months respectively.
Last year, which witnessed a good Monsoon, had registered 36.2 mm rainfall in May while June, 2011 had registered 143.2 mm rainfall.
In the past few years, only in the year 2009, the region had witnessed lesser rainfall in these months as compared to 2012. The year had registered 7.6 mm rainfall in May and 10.0 mm rainfall in June.
As per the statistics available, year 2008 had witnessed 19.0 mm rainfall in May while the month of June received record 247.7 mm rainfall. Similarly, in the year 2010, the month of May had registered 40.6 mm rainfall while June had received 74.8 mm rainfall.
Given the deficient rainfall, the ground water level has receded by 10 to 15 feet in Kandi areas of the region.
In the meanwhile, the soaring mercury even in the month of July, which as per weathermen may break record in the past 100 years, is adding to the sufferings of people in Jammu, already at the receiving end on account of delayed Monsoon and unending power curtailment. July 1 registered 44 degree Celsius temperature which was just 1 degree Celsius below the all time record temperature recorded on July 1, 1951.
The situation in the Valley, too, is not much better where Monday was registered as the hottest day of the year so far with 32.8 degree Celsius temperature.
