JAMMU, July 9: After hectic deliberations, Udhampur Deputy Commissioner, Pandu Rang Pole and SSP Ashraf Wani assured the workers of AFCONS that the matter would be taken up with concerned authorities to address the grievances and problems being faced by the working community. After the assurance from DC, the workers today called off their strike on the 4th day.
The workers of National Highway 4-laning project at Garnai Udhampur called off their strike which began on Friday due to the non-seriousness attitude of the management of AFCONS for their anti-workers policy.
When contacted APCWU president O P Sanyal said, “Udhampur DC and SSP have visited the spot to address the demands of the workers. Earlier, the concerned authorities forced the labours to resume work but the workers refused and decided to continue the strike till their demands were accepted.”
He added that the leaders also apprised the DC that until and unless the Jammu Regional Labour Commissioner did not participate in the meeting with management to discuss the whole matter to sort out the problems of the workers in a proper manner which the workers had already submitted the charter of demands to the management.
“Why the management is not providing job cards, code numbers to the workers for submitting their monthly Provident Fund returns which the company have to pay on 10th of every month into their account as per labour laws. Some contractors including Sarpanches and Panches who were also involved in managing the labour for company have not deposited their PF into their account for the last three years. During the strike, the contractors also forcibly tried to prevent the workers from taking part in the strike on the directions of management. He appealed to the state government to look into the nexus between the company and contractors,” he alleged.
However, Federation of Union of Industrial Workers (FUIW) has decided in a joint meeting to extend its full support to the agitating workers of Garnai in which various unions leader affiliated with FUIW including All Project Construction Worker’s Union (APCWU) Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir Road Construction Workers Union (JKRCWU), Tunnel Project Chenani also participated under the leadership of its president Nirdosh Uppal at Bari Brahmana.
When contacted FUIW president Nirdosh warned the state government and concerned management to immediate address the problems of the striking workers otherwise from tomorrow, all the unions working on other projects of the state including Industrial workers of Jammu to stop their work to support the agitators in this context to show their resentment against the Company.
He said, “Since the post of Jammu Regional Labour Commissioner is still vacant and only one labour officer is presently look after all the problems of labour working in the entire state. The state labour department can look into the matters under the Industrial Dispute (ID) Act 1947 in construction industries whereas central labour department has a definite role in the implementation of government order of fixation of minimum wages as per the related SRO of May 2009.”
Earlier, the workers demanded equal work equal wage for workers, hill allowances, dearness allowances, house rent, conveyance allowances, annual increment, medical allowance, bonus, project allowances, tunnel allowances, food allowances, over time, weekly rent and national and festival holidays.
