| | CM supports UPA candidate for VP | | | SRINAGAR, July 9: Chief minister Omar Abdullah today announced his support as also that of his party National Conference (NC) for UPA’s candidate for vice president’s (VP) post. “I support the UPA's candidate for VP. Let a decision be arrived at first regarding the person,” Omar wrote on the micro-blogging site, twitter. Omar added, “I thought the PM's discussions with political parties regarding Hamid Ansari for VP were to be confidential until final decision was taken.” A follower reacted, “We heard that Jenab Farooq sahib is on cards for VP from UPA!!! Is it so that you support whole heartedly just in beginning???” It may be recalled here that during NDA rule at centre, Dr Farooq Abdullah was very keen to become the president or vice president of the country. He had publicly expressed his wish in this connection. This was the time when Dr Abdullah was intending to pave way for his son, Omar Abdullah to replace him as the chief minister. However, Dr Abdullah’s wish was not fulfilled as NDA picked up APJ Abdul Kalam as its candidate for the post of president. He was finally not even considered for the post of the vice president. Soon after, Omar, who was the chief ministerial candidate of National Conference, lost the 2002 assembly polls. Dr Abdullah once stated that it was not him who was keen to become president or vice president. “It was the then prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, who had told me that I will be NDA’s candidate for any of the two posts. I do not know as to why he backed out later,” the NC leader said. |
