JAMMU, Jul 9: After the death of four more pilgrims, including two women who died enroute the Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir, the death toll in the ongoing yatra has mounted to 51 today.
According to reports, fifty-year-old Jayanta Mukherjee, hailing from West Bengal, died of cardiac arrest at Sheshnag along the Pahalgam route, officials informed. Meanwhile, another woman pilgrim Usha, a resident of Gujarat, died following cardiac arrest, they added.
Ram Chander Gupta, aged 55, and Chota Bhai Patel, hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat respectively, died on way to 3,880-ft high Amarnath cave shrine.
Amid heavy rush of the pilgrims at the holy cave shrine of Shri Amarnath, a fresh batch of 4,025 pilgrims today left for Amarnath cave shrine in South Kashmir Himalayas.
The pilgrims comprising 2,761 men, 999 women, 65 children and 200 sadhus left in a cavalcade of 130 vehicles from Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu at around 5.30 AM for Amarnath yatra. These yatris will leave for darshan from base camps of Nunwan and Baltal early tomorrow morning, the spokesman said.
With today's batch, as many as 49,000 pilgrims have left Jammu base camp of Bhagwati Nagar for their onward journey to the cave shrine of Amarnath.
It may be recalled that the yatra will culminate on Sawan Purnima coinciding with Raksha Bandhan on August 2.
The total number of yatris visiting the cave shrine situated in South Kashmir district of Anantnag at a height of 3,888 metres has reached at nearly 3, 39,917 since the 39-day long pilgrimage started on June 25. Till yesterday, 2.99 lakh pilgrims had performed darshan in holy cave, an official spokesman said.
He said the unabated rush of pilgrims continued despite the hazardous weather conditions as thousands of yatris from different parts of country are daily reporting at two base camps of Nunwan-Pahalgam and Baltal.
Meanwhile, according to MET Department there would be one or two spells of rains on both shortest Baltal and traditional Pahalgam tracks with cloudy sky during the next 24 hours. However the weather was partially cloudy but dry today, the spokesman said.
“The yatris who had night halt at different halting stations enroute the cave shrine also started their onward journey this morning while those who had paid their obeisance at the holy cave also started their return journey” he added.
