SRINAGAR, Aug 23: The Hurriyat Conference (G) today objected to the alleged plan of granting citizenship to the refugees from Pakistan who settled in the state.
“The refugees who came here as a result of the wars between India and Pakistan shall not be granted citizenship. Around 15 Lakh people were forced to migrate to Pakistan from Jammu and Kashmir as a result of these wars, but these issues cannot be settled before settlement of the Kashmir issue,” the conglomerate said in a statement issued here.
New Delhi is likely to constitute a high level committee, to be monitored by Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) or the Union Home Ministry, for examining all outstanding issues (except state subject issue) of all categories of refugees and Displaced Persons (DPs) in J&K, and work out a package for their one-time settlement.
The hint about the likely constitution was drawn from the meeting of a high level delegation of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) led by its president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, party president Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde yesterday.
The delegation submitted a memorandum and briefed the Prime Minister, UPA chairperson and Home Minister about the long pending demands and issues of refugees of 1947 from West Pakistan and displaced persons of 1947 from PoK, besides 1965 and 1971 who have settled in various districts of Jammu region.
It briefed the leaders about various demands of different categories of these refugees and displaced persons which have remained unresolved so far. The delegation demanded special concessions for them in the field of education and recruitment for their wards and sought attention of the central leadership towards their other issues to be dealt at the central level. The delegation also discussed the issues of the border migrants and those residing near Line of Control (LoC) and Zero Line for their relief and alternate sites for their accommodation in safer zones in their respective areas.
The Hurriyat (G), however, said the intentions of providing them with the citizenship “is part of the plan to change the demography of the state.”
It said: “Soz is using it as a short cut to become the chief minister of the state.”
