| | Indigenous fruit and vegetable varieties on wane | | | Dear Editor, The markets nowadays are filled with the produce from other states of the country. No matter what, one is able to buy fruits and vegetables in any season which earlier was impossible owing to the seasonal variations in the three regions of the State. Now, it is possible to buy a variety of fruits or vegetables because due to an improved Transport system. The caveat however, lies in the fact that in our own State, indigenous varieties have and are being neglected. Perhaps, the State Agricultural Department hasn’t deemed it proper to preserve the native gene pool and the results are there for all to see. Most of the cereals and fruits, vegetables have vanished as if from the minds of the people themselves, because of the prevailing scenario. But, no one seems to be bothered as long as the markets satisfy their needs even at the cost of indigenous flora and fauna, which includes fishes as well. —Riya Malhotra, Green Belt, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. |
