| | Disaster management in J&K | | | Dear Editor, Today International Fire safety day is being observed in the State and elsewhere in the country. Disaster management though an important ministry in the Central government, is yet to come in its full gear perhaps due to the sheer magnitude of tasks involved. Obviously, the onus later falls on the Army to clean up the mess. Being pre-emptive is one of the key areas which need to be focused as the country is constantly under the threat of natural disasters. Earthquakes, fires, floods, storms etc are some of the disasters where the need to be prepared beforehand is the need of the hour. Disaster management ministry can perhaps take a cue from the advanced systems utilized in the rest of the world. Plus, the manpower skilled in handling the aftermath of any disaster is another cornerstone of an effective policy. —Ambika Malhotra, Jammu. |
