| | 9-year-old injured in accident | | Protest in Pantha Chowk | | SRINAGAR, Jul 17: A 9-year-old girl, Tania, daughter of Dr Muneer Ahmad of Batamaloo was today injured after being hit by a CRPF vehicle near Pantha Chowk, causing protests in the area. According to the witnesses, the girl, traveling in a car with her grandfather, had her head out of the window. And, they said, a CRPF vehicle hit her. The girl was rushed to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) where she, when this report was filed, was being operated upon for head injuries. The incident caused protests in the area with people blocking the highway, leading to south Kashmir, and raising slogans. The protesters did not allow movement of the vehicles from any side. The protests continued till evening.Confirming the incident, the police said a case has been registered under RPC section, 279, and 273. It, however, said the vehicle was not identified yet. “Yes the police say it was a CRPF vehicle, but nothing has been established as yet,” an official in the police station Pantha Chowk said. |

| ‘Militant’ killed in Handwara encounter | | SRINAGAR, Jul 17: An unidentified ‘militant’ was killed in the wee hours today in an encounter with police and army at Batsunjhi in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police said.
The militant, according to the police, was hiding in the forest near Jaba in the village. On a tip off, the police and army started a search operation overnight, resulting in a gunfight that ended at 9 AM with death of the ‘militant’.
