| | JU suspends 2 engineers | | | JAMMU, July 17: Jammu University has suspended Executive Engineer and an Assistant Engineer (AE) for corruption in University's Public Works Department. Official sources said that Vice Chancellor Prof M P Ishar Singh ordered the suspension of XEN Suresh Sharma and AE Akash Bhola for their alleged involvement in misappropriation of PWD funds. They said that the VC had also written to the government for initiating action against JE Varinder Singh Wazir, who was on deputation in the University. "A matter was brought to the notice of the Vice-Chancellor that the suspended officials had withdrawn about Rs 3.5 lakh by showing completion of tiling work in the Business School in papers," they added. Acting on a complaint, the case was handed over to the State Vigilance Organisation, who submitted its report yesterday following which the officials were suspended as they were allegedly found involved in the bungling. |

| ‘Militant’ killed in Handwara encounter | | SRINAGAR, Jul 17: An unidentified ‘militant’ was killed in the wee hours today in an encounter with police and army at Batsunjhi in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police said.
The militant, according to the police, was hiding in the forest near Jaba in the village. On a tip off, the police and army started a search operation overnight, resulting in a gunfight that ended at 9 AM with death of the ‘militant’.
