Sham celebrates Lohri with physically challenged

JAMMU, Jan 13: Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Sham Lal Sharma celebrated Lohri festival with the physically challenged children at Jammu Red Cross (JRC) Home for Handicapped at Udhaywala, here today.

Deputy Commissioner, Jammu Sanjeev Verma, President JRC, P.C.Kapoor, General Secretary, JRC J. Chhaterpal, former IAS officer Mohammad Shafi Pandit, prominent social activist, Nighat Shafi Pandit, several social workers, prominent citizens and inmates were present on the occasion.

The minister spent more than two hours with the physically challenged children and shared festival joys with them. He extended greetings to each inmate and distributed sweets among them.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that physically and mentally retarded children have every right to live a dignified life and “We should extend helping hand to them for their proper rehabilitation.” He maintained that service to the mankind was service to the God and people irrespective to their caste; creed and colour should come forward and help such children in whatever way.

Appreciating the management for maintaining the Home, the minister said that JRC had been doing yeoman’s service to the mankind and the noble initiative was an inspiration for others. He assured all possible help from the government for running the Home and urged the management to provide necessary education to the children so that they could become self-reliant. He asked them to acquaint the inmates about the moral ethos and rich heritage of India so that they could contribute for the social reforms.

The minister also honoured Nighat Shafi Pandit in recognition to her social work on the occasion. Nighat Shafi is a prominent social worker of Kashmir and has distinction to receive prestigious Jamna Lal Bajaj award.

The children presented colourful bonanza of cultural items, which mesmerized the jam packed audience.

Chhaterpal while giving resume of the activities of the Home said that Home maintained around 60 children of different age groups. The Home took care of their education, health and other issues. He said the management had full responsibility of each child and several measures had been taken for their rehabilitation. The Home is run on the donation of common man and receives only a meagre share of grant-in-aids from the government.

P C Kapoor thanked the gathering for gracing the occasion.

Earlier in the day, the minister also participated in a religious Nagar Kirtan procession taken out by the Sikh devotees at Mishriwala to mark the celebrations of 347th birth anniversary of 10th Guru Gobind Singhji. The procession was organized by the Nagar Keertan Committee, Block Bhalwal which was attended by thousands of devotees from different parts of the Jammu.
