GMC without Principal for one month
Dear Editor,
I would like to bring into the kind notice of (MoS) Minister for State Health towards the GMC which is without a Principal since last month. Call it a total mismanagement on the part of concerned authorities or lack of co-ordination between various administrative departments, the fact which can be gauged from this is that the prestigious post is still lying vacant.
One wonders at the possible fate of GMC, a premier health Institution where mismanagement reigns in absence of a Principal.
Recently, Chief Minister chaired a high-powered committee in which Commissioner/Secretary and other related officers of health participated. The authority announced names of five Doctors, Dr Anience Chowdhary who is acting Vice-Principal, Dr Shashi Gupta, Dr Ghanshyam, Dr Azad etc. for filling up the said post.
The latter is lying vacant after the retirement of Dr Rajinder Singh who is a chest Physician and also treats patients at Chest Disease Hospital, Bakshi Nagar. After his retirement, everything was unsystematic, but then who cares for the ailing! The GMC is already burdened under a great load, with the patients coming from the far-flung areas for treatment. Here, the question arises whether the State Government or the higher authorities take into consideration, the political links of these Doctors or the innate talent and brilliance present in the Medicos as their ultimate criteria to select them? This is a million dollar question which begs answers.
Before the retirement of Dr Rajinder, a meeting was chaired by the ministers concerned and the Commissioner/Secretary in which Singh was given the extension, but didn’t agree for the same because he wished to proceed to another country for further studies/job.
Hope the authorities would wake from their deep slumber and take into consideration the need of patients before it is too late.
—Mohammad Irfan, Jammu.
