| | Partners in crime | | Discriminatory yardsticks, treatment are irksome | | It is really irksome to note that in any crime related news report, the criminals among the white-collared privileged lot are given a protective leverage over their accomplices, belonging to common strata of the society, by the media as well as police, though they are held for the same crimes and guilty in equal measure. This occurs although the jurisprudence demands that nobody can be held as criminal till his or her guilt is established. But ironically this rule is not followed in letter and spirit for those who are bracketed outside the privileged strata. Not to talk of their names and other details, but not even a minor clue is allowed to be trickled in media about the bigwigs, though equal partners in crime, while same rule is not followed in case of criminals belonging to ‘the lesser mortals’ category. In the case of bigwigs, the incomplete investigation is an excuse, but the other side is not given similar advantage. Nauseatingly, this discrimination is more palpable in case of women and particularly in reports about busting of sex rackets. Generally in such cases, the identity and other details of women are made public giving them a sensational, saucy colour even before the commencement of legal proceedings aimed at establishing their guilt. Yet an eerie silence is maintained about the high-profiled customers involved in the racket though the particular crime always has an involvement of two partners. In selective leaks, even if some details are revealed about the influential clientele, enough care is taken that they are clearly not identified so as to be doomed to live a life of shame in future. However, the women involved in such crimes are denied that leverage and thus are condemned to live an ignominious life. Why should the ‘partners in crime’ not be the ‘partners in ignominy’? |
