Mary Kom enters SF, assured of a medal
Discus thrower Vikas Gowda qualifies for the final
LONDON, Aug 6(Agencies): India's Mary Kom put in another fine performance in the ring on Monday to assure India of another medal as she knocked aside Tunisia's Maroua Rahali, thereby moving into the women’s flyweight (51kg) category semi-finals.
The 29-year-old five-time world champion won her bout 15-6, having dominated from the start. She exhibited a great show in the ring, winning each four rounds to claim an unbeatable nine-point advantage. She has assured herself of a historic Olympic medal with this win.
Mary was on the defensive side in the first two rounds which she won 2-1, 3-2 respectively. In the third round, the crowd got to see the better of Mary Kom as she thumped back-to-back punches at her opponent who was taken by surprise.
The 11-4 scoreline in the third round was the decisive lead that Mary needed as it is never easy to erase a 7-point deficit without a knock-out.
The last round was all about keeping her cool although Mary at times got tempted to punch her opponent at the back of her head inviting caution from the referee. Still she managed to clinch the round with a 4-2 score and the final margin of 15-6 was certainly a convincing way to get into the semi-final.
DISCUSS THROW: Vikas Gowda of India has qualified for the men's discus throw final at the London Olympics here on Monday.
The US based Indian threw 65.20 metres in his second attempt to make the cut. The automatic qualification standard for the discus final was set at 65m. Ehsan Hadadi of Iran was just behind Gowda with a throw of 65.19m.
Gowda became the first Indian to win a medal at the prestigious Diamond League Series in June during the New York leg when he picked up a bronze with a throw of 64.86m. He also topped the IAAF rankings for a while.
Vikas, the six-feet-nine-inch tall Indian whose personal best is 66.28m, was considered one of the two best bets for India to win a medal in athletics in London - the other being discus thrower Krishna Poonia.
Currently, there are 16 throwers above him in the IAAF list, with reigning world and European champion Robert Harting leading the pack with year's best of 70.66m.
SHOOTING: Indian rifle shooters Gagan Narang and Sanjeev Rajput failed to qualify for the London Olympics finals of the men's 50-metre rifle three positions here at the Royal Artillery Barracks on Monday.
Narang, Olympic bronze medallist in 10m air rifle, finished 20th with a score of 1,164 while Rajput ended at 26th with 1,161.
Narang shot 398 in prone, 377 standing and 389 while kneeling. Rajput scored 395 in prone, 378 in standing and 388 while kneeling. Italy's Niccolo Campriani created an Olympic record scoring a total of 1,180 with an average of 9.833.
This also ends Narang's campaign at the Games. He participated in two other events: the 10-metre air rifle event, where he won the bronze, and the 50-metre rifle prone.
