Teenage girl ‘murdered’: Protestors block Anantnag-Kishtwar road
SHABIR AHMAD
SRINAGAR, Aug 8: The alleged murder of a teenaged girl in Watnad area of Kokernag last week and the inaction of the police to solve the case triggered massive protests in the area today. The protestors also blocked Anantnag-Kishtwar road.
After the protests, the police arrested four accused including three women of a family.
Reports said that an 11th class student Mahajabeena, daughter of Mohammad Ishaq
Khan of Watnad, was found half dead in her village, 1 km away from her home on Thursday last. She was immediately rushed to hospital but she succumbed to severe burn injuries there as she had allegedly been set ablaze by her murderers.
After the incident, the family of the victim lodged complaint in the police station Kokernag, stating that their daughter was murdered by a neighbouring family. They demanded thorough probe into the matter.
With no progress into the investigation for last five days, the family supported by hundreds of people of the area today staged massive protests . The protestors blocked Anantnag-Kishtawar road till late afternoon.
“She was murdered by a neighbouring family after they recovered a cell phone from their daughter who told them that the same had been given to her by the victim. On this they took her to their home, first beat her there and later set her ablaze ,” said the protestors.
They said the wrists of the victim were also broken. “When we found her burnt body she was only wearing pheran. Both her wrists were also broken,” said the protestors.
“Despite seeing the condition of the body of the victim, the police did not even conduct her postmortem. Police inaction forced us to take to streets,” the protestors said.
As the protestors refused to allow the transport to ply on the highway the police officials and additional deputy commissioner rushed to the spot and sought two days to investigate the case after which the protestors were pacified.
When contacted Additional deputy commissioner Anantnag, Nisar Hussain Wani, said that they have asked the police to investigate the case fairly and quickly.
“I rushed to the spot and assured the protestors of fair probe. Police has been asked to carry out the investigations into the case without any delay. On our directions the police immediately arrested four accused belonging to the same family,” ADC said.
He said the accused who have been arrested include three women also. They have been identified as Rameez Ahmad Shiekh, his mother Sakeena Begum and his two sisters Nadiya and Roohi.
