| | Outbreak of water-borne disease | | Govt has failed in gauging the quantum of pressure on sanitation post-yatra | | | Outbreak of water-borne disease in Kangan and surrounding areas after the conclusion of Amarnath Yatra due to large scale dumping of food and other waste material in around the base camp in Sonamarg speaks of the callous attitude of the state government towards sanitation. In fact, common masses in general and environmentalists in particular have been expressing their concern over the sanitation issue in view of the increased number of pilgrims this year over ecological issues because heavy rush has been putting lot of pressure on the water and forest resources. It is only now that the government agencies have woken up from their deep slumber over the issue of diseases in the post yatra period which had been feared for long. Unfortunately, such outbreak of disease can cost the local population heavily and the disease in an epidemic form can take its toll. It will be in the fitness of the things that such issues are tackled with sensitivity at the earliest immediately after the conclusion of the pilgrimage. Though everybody has heaved a sigh of relief when yatra concluded in a peaceful manner throughout the period of yatra except for the deaths that occurred due to accidents and natural causes. Moreover, the sanitation issue needs to be taken care off by the concerned authorities immediately so that such fears of water-borne diseases are eliminated forthwith. Somehow work on sanitation issue should have begun early and this incident of disease could be prevented in the first instance. From now onwards, the authorities should bear in mind that such issues should be tackled on priority basis. Apart from this area, the traditional route of Amarnath yatra is also properly attended to since pressure on it has also been high compared to the previous years. |
