Valley gears up for Eid
SANA ALTAF
SRINAGAR, Aug 7: Stalls of crackers, colorful clothes and aroma of sweets has begun filling the air in Kashmir as Valley gears up for the festival of Eid-ul-fitr.
With the festival just few days away, and with rainfall bringing relief from the heat, the fasting crowd of people on the streets and in markets has picked up. People are engaged in shopping for the festival. Shopkeepers, vendors, bakers and sweet sellers are witnessing a huge rush of customers. The markets open early in the morning and remain open for late evenings. Some days back, heat and humid weather has largely kept people away from markets.
“Since Eid is just few days away, I have begun shopping for it,” said Deeba Khan, a housewife.
“I want to keep myself free on the eve of Eid. So I thought of finishing all shopping and do rest preparations at home,” added Rehana, a teacher.
Markets also keep open on Sundays to enable people to shop on off days.
“We did very good business on Sunday as people are shopping for Eid. The market was packed,” said Mohammad Iqbal, a vendorer selling shoes.
A shopkeeper at Lal Chowk said, “We had kept our shops open for the Eid. Next Sunday also we expect to open our shops for Eid.”
People from the outskirts of the Valley have started visiting Srinagar for shopping, particularly at the Sunday market.
“We come to Srinagar for shopping on every Eid. Today also, I came with my mother to buy clothes from Lal Chowk,” says Akhtar from Sopore.
Amid all this, the traffic mess has begun seizing the main city areas due to the increasing rush of people. The traffic department is likely to come out with a plan of action for the last days of Ramdhaan when the city center remained jam packed.
To relieve the main city from the traffic mess witnessed last year during this period, traffic department had restricted the traffic movement around Lal Chowk and Residency road around the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.
