Traffic signals creating mess
Dear Editor,
Notwithstanding the tall claims of the State Government the Traffic Police to control the traffic jams and making people to obey the traffic rules, like signal lights are confined to papers only and are being violated with impunity.
Traffic lights were installed in Jammu on 23rd July with much fanfare and haven’t come up to the expectations of the people. First the companies who was entrusted the job installed the outdated lights. These lights started to function from 4th August. As the people are not yet accustomed to the signal lights in the State, especially the Drivers, a mess are being witnessed on the roads.
At present there are many loopholes which have to be plugged like the installation of the sign boards and the yellow lights. Zebra crossings are now being introduced for the pedestrians so that they can abide by the traffic norms.
It has come to fore that much hyped traffic signals are outdated and primitive. The tenders being flouted by the concerned authorities are out to deceive the Traffic Deptt and the State Govt. Startling revelations revealed that it was an old story. A tender had been brought for the consideration of Previous IGP traffic, now ADGP, IGP, so that he could sign it and what is more interesting in the w issue is that upon doing so he was to be bestowed with the luxury car ‘Fortune’ but the latter refused. After a certain time period, the higher officials of the Traffic Deptt again brought up the tender before him to be signed and this time he duly agreed. By this single act, he threw norms to the winds without taking into consideration whether the traffic signals were from a reputed company or not.
The inauguration of the traffic signals on 4th August 2012 was done with much fanfare by Dy CM Tara Chand and the concerned ministers. But it is ironical that after just three days, the traffic signals went non-functional for several hours. The authorities at the helm of affairs are unaware about the proper functioning of the traffic signals which go on flashing signals for more than three hours. This is a million dollar question which begs answers. There are yet many points in the city, where the lights are installed but don’t function.
It is ironical that the Traffic Police most of the times are busy in imposing ‘challans’ and ‘hafta’ from the Matadors and the pillion riders. For an entry towards the BC Road, every Matador has to cough up Rs 200 to the traffic officials; otherwise the vehicle is not allowed to not ply on the road. Traffic officials hardly bother about the rules and regulations themselves and there are many instances where it was observed that they act as mute spectators while not reprimanding the commuters who violate the signals with impunity. To do anything in its right perspective a strong will and determination is needed which is found lacking as far as our officials are concerned.
There is a need for to be aware about the installed signals and those who violate them should be dealt strongly. Also, the Ministers at the Transport Deptt should take into account those traffic officials who impose ‘challans’ on the Matadors.
—Mohd Irfan,
Jammu
