Parliamentary democracy negated: PM
New Delhi, Sept 7 (Agencies) : Expressing his displeasure over the complete washout of the Monsoon Session of Parliament over Coalgate, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Friday that Opposition has completely disregarded the set norms of Parliamentary democracy.
Speaking to reporters after the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were adjourned sine die, Singh said, “We have great respect for the institution of CAG but if we respect it then we must debate its finding in PAC and on the floor of the house.”
Slamming the Opposition, the Prime Minister said the Opposition did not agree to debate. “This is total negation of democracy, if the thought process of disruption is allowed to gain momentum, it will be a grave violation of norms of Parliamentary democracy,” he said.
The Prime Minister said that the country is facing a number of problems, and the Parliament should have discussed these issues, but Parliament was not allowed to debate.
“The Parliament is the forum where we articulate the needs of the people but it was totally paralysed. I urge countrymen to see whether this is the right way to conduct democracy,” he said.
“All right-thinking people should stand up and unitedly state that Parliamentary institutions should be allowed to function,” he added.
