Rains, landslides block Jammu-Srg highway

JAMMU, Sep 17: As rains continue to lash the region, 300 kilometer long Jammu Srinagar National Highway remain closed due to landslides and sliding stones in Ramban, today. Another vital road link to valley Dhar Road was also blocked due to landslides at Darsoo area of Udhampur district.
Due to landslide, over 300 vehicles got stranded at various places on the NH, only road link to valley. Long queues of vehicles including load carriers and passenger vehicles are stranded at Magarkot and Khooni nullah.
The men and machines of Border Roads Organisation have been pressed into service to clear the highway.
Official reports the highway was closed for vehicular traffic from both side due to landslide and shooting stones which triggered at Panthal, Seri and Kela Morh this evening at 6 PM.
However, senior traffic officer said that the landslide was triggered by heavy rains at Seeri in Ramban district resulting in blockade of the highway this evening.
The officer added that the vehicular traffic was stopped keeping in view safety of the passengers and vehicles. They said that at Panthal due to continuing shooting stones the situation became hazardous and traffic authorities took decision to stop the vehicular traffic.
Reports from Udhampur said that hundreds of vehicles were stranded due to landslides at Darsoo area of Dhar Road near Udhampur. Landslides with shooting stones started in the afternoon thus choking the vehicular movement on the Dhar Road.
BEACON authorities pressed into service men and machinery but the road was not made through till late evening. Hundreds of vehicles were struck up on the both sides of the road.
