| | Many a talent wasted? | | | Dear Editor, Innumerable opportunities have to be foregone by the people below the poverty line. Nothing, but sheer apathy and in many cases, ignorance regarding the talent hidden in the dark corners of our country is to be blamed for the mess. Take for instance, the field of sports where we have been a witness to many a gem rusting away in the squalor of poverty. A famous name in the Archery a few years back had to work as a stone-crusher to earn her livelihood. And this was after she had won a number of gold medals for her country in the Archery department. A trust should be built on the lines of a blood bank, where a sizable amount of money should be earmarked for sportspersons who have virtually nothing in the name of a decent living and are often hard pressed for money. The country needs such gems given the kind of dismal performances we had recently in the Olympics, barring the sole gold medal by Marykom in the women’s wrestling arena. —Siddarth, via email |
