Deplorable land deals
Govt’s failure to develop new colonies has given a boost to private builders in J&K
The incident of a lower rung revenue official selling government land to a private party in Anantnag is just a tip of the iceberg so far as land deals in rest of Jammu and Kashmir are concerned. In fact, big chunks of land spread across the length and breadth of the state are being sold and re-sold by some revenue officials and private colonizers with the tacit understanding of the ministers concerned and members of land mafia because everybody involved in such deals is sharing the booty earned out of this process. That is the main reason why some of the land deals get through easily while transfer or sale of a small of land for housing needs gets stuck up because the sharks among the land mafia are getting benefit out of this process. Apart from this, the information doled out by the state government in reply to RTI applications are themselves an eye opener for the state government and the common masses. This is because of the fact that majority of the people involved in this process enjoy not only the political patronage but also support from the concerned quarters and these deals get through overnight. Otherwise also regulation of the colonies by the private builders has been left to some incompetent officials in the development authorities in both regions where even adherence to master plan is a far-fetched dream for the commoners. It will not be out of place to mention that it is the failure of the state government in coming up with new colonies in both the regions that has given a boost to the private colonizers for meeting the housing needs of the increased demand for housing in mainly the two capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu during the past few decades.
