Salary: Husband to wife!
By S Mukhtar
“Uncle.”
“Yes dear.”
“Heard about the wives’ salary proposal?”
“Yeah.”
“Details please?”
“Wonderful…any wife too shall have a regular salary…from her husband’s salary! The Central Government’s Women and Child Development Ministry is proposing to make it a law.”
“O something more?”
“O much more indeed. One women’s rights activist pleads that the husband paying salary to wife implies he is the boss and she the servant: the government should instead by law provide an equal share to wife of her husband's property. Sahiya Dehlawi, a writer working for women empowerment, argues women’s social security needs the government should provide for the wife’s share in her husband’s fixed deposits and policies.”
“And Uncle some opposition somewhere?”
“O much! Save Family Foundation, an NGO representing some 40 different men's organisations across the country, seeks immediate withdrawal of the proposal, and has written so to the Union Women and Child Development Minister; it has also sought the Prime Minister’s personal intervention.”
“Good Uncle.”
“Yes.”
“Some points.”
“Say.”
“Wife at home, husband earning, a part of his salary to her – agreed OK. But if wife has a salary, or her salary is more than her husband’s…there are such families…any part of her salary to him?”
“Not said.”
“Provide equal share to wife of her husband's property – do. Then, an equal share to husband also of his wife’s ancestral property?”
“I don’t know.”
“Wife’s share of her husband’s fixed deposits and policies – agreed: husband’s share too there of his wife’s same possessions?”
“Don’t know.”
“Uncle, some men, and women, have been worse than brutes to their daughters…see records of female infanticide and now female foeticide. Why not then some portion of man’s salary directly to the daughter also? And similarly why not a portion of an earning mother’s salary also directly to the daughter? Justice has to be all round.”
Silence!
“And then what have the sons done? Yes, some portions of man’s salary directly to them also. Look Uncle, wife leading the march…all daughters…all sons…the pilgrims must every payday reach the husband’s salary paying authority…and take their apportioned shares. And the next day, husband leading the march…all daughters…all sons…the pilgrims must do the same at the (earning) wife’s paying authority’s office.”
“Please don’t eat my brains.”
“God forbid! Not me sir, these Politicians are eating our brains all whole! And wonder that we always allow them to! Good Uncle, goodbye!”
