GDC Kathua men, GGM women claim titles

UDHAMPUR, Sep 22: Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua and GGM Science College shared the top honours in the inter-college chess tournament which was hosted by GDC Udhampur under the banner of Department of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, here.
While GDC Kathua retained the men’s trophy after they defeated Government College for Engineering and Technology (GCET) 4-0 in the final. In women’s final, GGM Science College defeated the title holders, Government College for Women (GCW) Parade 3-0.
In the valedictory function, Director Sports and Physical Education, JU, Prof. Dhian Singh Bhau was the chief guest, who gave away the championship trophies.
Congratulating the winners, he appreciated the efforts of the host College in organizing the tournament and also the players for their enthralling performance. He also stressed that a game should be played for the sake of game not for triumph or defeat.
Earlier, Head of the Department of Chemistry of the host college, Dr SK Magotra extended welcome to the guests. He informed said that 23 teams of women and 26 teams in men’s section were their in the fixture.
National Arbiter, SP Sharma and Sushil Kumar Sawhney were officials deputed by JU. Vijay Gupta, PTI, GDC Udhampur coordinated the tournament.
