Chib inaugurates Prof. Nazir Ahmad Khan Boxing Championship -2012
SRINAGAR, Oct 14: Minister for Youth Services & Sports R S Chib today inaugurated 2-day Prof. Nazir Ahmad Khan District Boxing Championship (Boys & Girls)-2012 at Sher-i-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex Srinagar.

The Boxing Championship for boys and girls was organized by the District Srinagar Amature Boxing Association to commemorate the contributions of Prof. Nazir Ahmad Khan for promoting sports in general and Boxing in particular. Prof Nazir served the community with dedication and distinction in various capacities, initially as Principal of SP College, Srinagar and later as Chairman of J&K Public Service Commission. He was an ace boxer who won many national and state level boxing championships including Aligarh Muslim University Boxing Championship where he studied. He was the first person who introduced Boxing and Lawn Tennis sports in SP College.

Speaking on the occasion, Chib paid rich tributes to Prof. Nazir and highlighted his contributions for promotion of Boxing in the Valley. He lauded the efforts of the organizers for organizing such events, adding that it is the best way to pay tribute to those whose have contributed a lot in their respective fields.

The Minister said Boxing improves physical capacity, strength, power, endurance, coordination, aerobic and anaerobic fitness. “Boxing helps to build, tone muscular strength and outlet for pent-up aggression,’’ he maintained. He said, in Boxing, the participant is himself responsible for his success and failure which develops sense of accountability, self-confidence, work ethics and sportsmanship.

The Minister said the government is making all out efforts to provide adequate sports infrastructure to the players which enable them to compete at international and national levels, adding that various initiatives have been taken in this regard. He said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is keen for promotion of sports in the state, which builds the physique healthy, fine tone the personality of the sports person and builds camaraderie. He said the government organized various national and State level sports events in different sports. He reiterated the endeavour of the government for expanding the ambit of sports activities in rural areas and said that various sports activities are underway at block and panchayat levels to provide equal opportunities to the rural youth. .

Later, the Minister gave away medals and trophies among the winners and runners-up participants.
