Concern over Sports Council functioning
KT NEWS SERVICE
"
JAMMU, Jun 12: General Secretary J&K Olympic Association Dr Ashutosh Sharma today raised serious questions vis-à-vis the functioning of Sports Council. “Although the Council’s term expired on June 3, 2013, the Secretary is still continuing unconstitutionally and has allotted works without any authority rendering all such actions, financial transactions illegal and liable to be challenged in the court of law,” he said.

While addressing a press conference in Jammu, Dr Sharma said that the Sports Council secretary’s arbitrary action of placing Olympic disciplines like Judo, Weightlifting, Shooting, Gymnastic, Fencing and other important disciplines in category B had been challenged in the High Court for which notice was also issued to the Secretary.

“His other order No. SC/332-A/7054-58 of 31-03-2013 with regard to the enhancement of entry fee to the Stadium has also been stayed by the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir. The Secretary has sanctioned huge amounts to Sports disciplines whose bosses are members of the State Sports Council for the reasons well known to him only. Other Associations are deprived of this privilege. Funds meant for the promotion of games and sports are being utilized for construction including his offices at Jammu (about Rs 40 lakhs) and Srinagar (about Rs 45 lakhs),” Dr Sharma alleged.

He further alleged that two full fledged Engineering wings had been created with full powers with the Secretary, being the head of two construction divisions. Sports Associations are being made to beg for train fare, bus fare, refreshment and DA during selection trails and coaching camps. So many representations have been made to the higher authorities including the Chief Minister but in vain,” he said.
