Geelani questions why Amarnath yatra can’t be conducted on Gangotri pattern

SRINAGAR, June 23: Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), today said prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh during his visit to Kashmir will have to explain as to why the duration of Amarnath yatra and number of pilgrims is not reduced on the pattern of Gangotri.
In a statement, he said if Indian prime minister believes in secularism he will have to explain as to why 150 years old Amarnath yatra is being used as a military campaign. “What is the justification for it and why the lives of pilgrims and environment of Jammu and Kashmir is put on danger for political reasons,” Geelani said.
He posed a query, “what are the hurdles in conducting pilgrimage on the pattern of Gangotri and why the government is rigid to give the yatra a shape of aggression?”
Hurriyat (G) chairman reiterated his general strike call for June 25 and alleged that arrival of prime minister has made the lives of Kashmiris worse. “Prior to his visit, arrests are being made on large scale in entire Kashmir. Youth are being arrested and lodged in police stations. Kashmir has been converted into an army fortress in the name of security arrangements. A war like situation has been created,” he said.
Geelani observed that during his visit to Kashmir, Dr Singh has to explain on moral grounds as to how long that genuine voice of Kashmiris will be crushed with military might and how long prime minister will shut his eyes on Kashmir
“Dr Singh is accountable before an innocent son of Mohammad Afzal Guru. He has to tell the boy as to why he was orphaned to satisfy the collective conscious of India. Why was the innocent boy deprived of an opportunity to see his father last time and why Afzal Guru’s body was not returned,” Hurriyat (G) chairman said.
He viewed that India claims to be the biggest democracy in world and its claim is not getting reflected in Kashmir. “Here thousands of people have been jailed under black laws and others placed under house arrest for year.”
