| | Umer Nabi retains Tour-de-Kashmir title | | | JAMMU, Oct 31: Umer Nabi of Shalimar Cycling Club retained the toughest cycling event of the state, winning the 11th J&K Bank Tour-de-Kashmir cycle race that took place from Srinagar to Gulmarg here today. During the race, Umer left behind top 28 riders of the state who have all represented the state at national level competitions. Muhammad Akbar Khan of Amar Singh College finished second while third place was bagged by Mansoor Ahmad of Chinar Cycling Club riding on country made local cycle. Fourth place was bagged by Amir Ahmad of Chinar Club again riding on country made cycle. Ghulam Rasool Kawa finished fifth while as Tanveer Ahmad Sheikh finished sixth. Umaid Arshad of Burnhall finished seventh while as Umer Bashir of SSC finished eight. Muhammad Adil Teli finished ninth while as Amir Assad finished tenth. First place was awarded with cash prize of Rs 10,000 while second place got 8,000. Third place was awarded with 5,000 and the fourth and fifth position holders got Rs 2,000 cash prize. This year route of event was changed from Srinagar to Gulmarg with total distance of 60 kilometers but tougher than the previous editions as more than 20 kilometers uphill climb. The event was held in two stages. First, from Srinagar toTangmarg and then from Tangmarg to Gulmarg. In first stage it was neck to neck battle as all the riders reached culminating point with only 10 minutes separating them. At Tangmarg, the second stage was flagged off jointly by CEO Gulmarg Development Authority, Mahmood Ahmad Shah and skier turned politician, Muhammad Abass Wani. It was toughest stage as riders had to climb steep slopes. Umer Nabi sprinted away from rest of riders getting a comfortable lead with the help of his superior technique and training method. He cruised to victory with the lead of around one and half kilometer thus retained the Tour-de-Kashmir title second successive time. The event was organised by J&K Sports Development Association (JKSDA) and sponsored by J&K Bank, Pine Palace Resort Gulmarg and Gulmarg Development Authority. Earlier event was flagged off from corporate office of J&K Bank by executive president, Taffazul Hussain and president HRD of the bank, Abdul Rouf Bhat. |
