Re-investigation of Kunan Poshpora case
Groups blame cop for ‘un-professionalism’
SRINAGAR, July 3: Support Group for Justice for Kunan Poshpora and JK Coalition of Civil Society (CCS) today alleged that the conduct of the SSP Kupwara as an investigating officer in the case is unbecoming, unprofessional and deeply disrespectful of the survivors and the processes of justice.

In a joint statement the groups said, “Today, on July 3, following the court order of June 18 for re-opening and further investigation of Kunan Poshpora mass rape case, the SSP Kupwara, Abdul Jabbar had summoned rape survivors to Kupwara court to get their statements recorded under Section 164. Yesterday, the assistant sub-inspector, Abdul Rashid was sent to Kunan Poshpora villages by the concerned SSP, with a detailed schedule for recording the statements of survivors and witnesses beginning from July 3 to 16.”

The statement added that in this context, today some of the rape survivors alongwith their family members and their counsel Advocate Parvez Imroz arrived at Kupwara court by 10 AM. After being made to wait for four hours, the chief prosecuting officer passed on the message of SSP Abdul Jabbar, that he has cancelled the scheduled recording of statements, as he was too busy with other unscheduled engagements. “We were informed that the whole schedule has been cancelled for some unknown reasons and the SSP wants to meet the women before preparing revised schedule,” the statement said.

It alleged that the conduct of the SSP Kupwara as an Investigating officer in this case is unbecoming, unprofessional and deeply disrespectful of the survivors and the processes of justice.” It appears from the behaviour of the SSP Kupwara that the state wants to discourage, harrass and exhaust the people of Kunan Poshpora. We would like to reiterate that nothing will exhaust us, nothing will harass us and nothing will deter us from continuing to struggle for truth and justice. A letter of protest has been submitted to the office of the SSP Kupwara and a written explanation has been sought for his uncalled for conduct,” the statement said.
