| | Corporal punishment- slur on humanity | | | Dear Editor, Recent cases of corporal punishment in Poonch, Rajouri and Samba districts yet again brought disgrace to the noble profession of teaching. The quote ‘the teacher is the best friend, philosopher and guide’ is almost losing its sheen with these incidents. The corporal punishment leads to fear psychosis amongst the children. Even in the days of yore, corporal punishment used to be almost a norm yet now it has assumed newer forms. But one needs to remember that the young minds cannot be taught anything with force using violent means. One cannot inculcate good habits using force. School is a miniature society or school of thought and is not a place to give punishments. There is dire need for the education department to awake from deep slumber and take stern action by enforcing stringent laws against the practice of corporal punishment. —Mohammed Irfan, Jammu. |
