| | Cong asks NC to take cognizance | | | JAMMU, Nov 19: Congress has asked its alliance partner National Conference (NC) to take cognizance of contentious remarks of National Conference additional general secretary Dr Mustafa Kamal.
This was stated by JKPCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz, while replying to media queries on the sidelines of a function organised at Pradesh Congress Committee office in connection with the birth anniversary celebrations of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi here today.
“The issue has been taken up with the leadership of National Conference. During Alliance Coordination Committee meeting, the party shared its concern with the partner and asked the party to take cognizance of his objectionable remarks,” Soz said.
Kamal had said, “Pakistan had offered a no-war pact with India. Why does India not agree to it? If India carries on with such attitude, then I have no hesitation in saying that our (Kashmiris') biggest enemy is our own country, not Pakistan.”
These comments had outraged the leaders of the Congress, alliance partner of the NC in J&K.
Later, Kamal issued a clarification retracting from his earlier statement and blamed media saying, “My history is known to everyone, my family's legacy and my political career of several decades is testimony to my credentials and today you call Mustafa Kamal anti-national. It deeply hurts me, what I said has been blown out of context.”
However the controversy refused to die down.
On November 17, the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad too had reiterated his demand for stern action against Kamal for terming India as an “enemy” country. Describing Kamal’s denial as meaningless, Azad had stated that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his father and Union Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah were under test to take action against their relative.
Farooq had termed the utterances of Kamal, his younger sibling and NC additional general secretary, simply as “irresponsible.”
Today talking to media, Soz, however, preferred to evade queries pertaining to spat between J&K Legislative Council Chairman Amrit Malhotra and Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohi-ud-Din vis-à-vis the constitution of House Committee to probe into land grab charges, which however was later dissolved. |
