| | SKUAST (K) routs PU Patiala in opening tie | | All India Vice Chancellor’s T-20 Cricket Cup-2012 commences | | JAMMU, Nov 19: Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports R. S. Chib today declared the All India Vice Chancellor’s T-20 Cricket Cup-2012 open, here at Jammu University campus. As many as twenty teams, including the host university team are participating in the 15-day cricket tournament. The inaugural match was played between SKUAST-K and Punjabi University, Patiala. The matches shall be played on league-cum-knock out basis in which each team shall play four matches in their respective pool and two top teams from each pool, whosoever qualifies, shall be selected for quarter-finals. In the opening tie, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Kashmir by a big margin of 54 runs in the inaugural league tie, Punjabi University (PU) Patiala today consolidated their position in group-D match. Earlier, batting first, after winning the toss, PU Patiala set a challenging target of 162 runs for the loss of four wickets, which, in reply, SKUAST could not chase and the whole side bowled out for 107 runs playing full 20 overs. Preet Pal Singh played brilliant innings of 30-ball 64 runs studded with eight boundaries and two sixes while Parminder Singh and Prem Parkash contributed 26 and 43 runs respectively. From SKUAST Kashmir, Mudassir Ali took two wickets while Mohd Ayub and Abdul Majeed shared apiece each. Later, SKUAST Kashmir lost all their wickets for 107 runs to lose their first league match by 54 runs. Sajad Ahmed remained top scorer with 25 runs while Gowhar Ahmed and Arif Hamid contributed 14 and 10 runs to the total. Prem Parkash was most successful bowler from PU Patiala, who claimed four wickets for 19 runs in four overs. Ramandeep Singh and Deepak Man Mohan shared two wickets each. For his all round performance, Prem Parkash was declared man of the match. He was presented with a cricket bat and trophy by organizing secretary of the tournament, Prof Dhian Singh Bhau in the presence of other members of the organizing committee, including Sunil Sahi In his inaugural address, the Minister said that Jammu University was a centre of excellence in curricular and extra-curricular activities as it has the distinction of winning the All India Vice Chancellor’s Cricket Cup for the two consecutive years of 2008-09 and 2009-10. Highlighting the importance of sports, Chib said that the Union Government was contemplating to include performance in sports in the overall academic merit to promote sports among the students. The Minister complimented Vice Chancellor and his management for organizing such a mega event. He said such events provide an opportunity to the participating players to play with ace players from different parts of the country. He said the event would give fillip to sports in Jammu University in particular and in state in general. He lauded the role of VC for promoting sports culture in Jammu University. He said the coming up indoor stadium in University would provide added facilities to the enthuastic sports persons, adding that the Department of Youth Services and Sports would also extend helping hand in providing sports infrastructure to this premier educational institution. On this occasion, Chib announces Rs. 10 lakh out of his CDF for construction of University Indoor Stadium. Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar highlighted the importance of November 19th - the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi. He said the day is celebrated throughout the country as National Integration Day. |
