| | CM must explain ‘How ministers obtain stay against SAC proceedings’: Vakil | | `Corruption eradication impossible in coalition’ | | NOWPORA, SOPORE, Nov 22: Taking statement of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that eradicating corruption was not possible in a coalition system with a pinch of salt, former minister and senior Congress leader Abdul Gani Vakil today asked the former to explain his statement and the circumstances and expose the persons creating hurdle in taking action against the corrupt.
“How can ‘Head’ of a State claim that eradicating corruption is not possible in a coalition system, when his own ministers have obtained stay in many cases against themselves, which since then have been long pending in State Accountability Commission (SAC)?” he questioned.
Vakil was addressing a party convention at Nowpora in Sopore.
“They (the ministers) should have allowed the proceedings and come clean thus setting an example that they respect law of the land and never become hurdle in course of law. The government must take cognizance of the pace of work of the Law department in this regard as presently no efforts are visible on the ground to get all the stays vacated in different Courts,” he stated.
He said that blaming coalition for one’s failure in eradication of menace of corruption did not do any good to the nation.
“People are awakened and want accountability and transparency in the system for which Congress has always stood by its people,” he said.
Vakil said his party Indian National Congress as well as its local state unit being coalition partner in Jammu and Kashmir had never been a hurdle in taking action against corrupt. He stressed upon the Chief Minister to expose those forces and leaders in the coalition who hampered the process of eradication of corruption or who had been trying to stop him from taking action against corrupt. This would go a long way in cleansing the administration and establishing credibility of both the coalition partners, he said.
“Chief Minister must explain the circumstances which had made him to reach this conclusion that eradication of corruption is impossible in coalition system,” Vakil said.
He stated it would have been in the interest of coalition if the Head of the state would have acted tough against corrupt, whether a politician or a bureaucrat instead of justifying or legitimizing corruption on the pretext of coalition.
Congress had never stopped Chief Minister from acting against corrupt. Action against union leaders like Suresh Kalmadi, A Raja, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and several other leaders at the state level was an indication that central leadership including AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh never shielded corrupt and made them face the law of the land.
Vakil reiterated his demand of incorporation of provisions of 73rd and 74th amendments of the Constitution and empowerment of the basic democratic institutions of Panchayats which was necessary for equitable development of all parts of the state. “Congress party is committed for empowerment of Panchayati Raj System on the pattern of 73rd amendment of the constitution,” he added.
The former minister also appealed Sarpanches and Panches of the State to support coalition candidates in the ensuing election of Legislative Council seats as the Congress was committed to empower them by getting incorporation of provision of 73rd and 74th amendments in J&K Acts.
Others, who addressed the convention included senior Congress leader and MLC Haji Ali, Mohammed Bhat, Sarpanches of Rafiabad and Sopore namely Altaf Ahmad Malik, Ghulam Ahmad Lone, Mohammad Dilawar Khan, Ghulam Nabi Parray, Hari Singh and Karan Singh. |
