| | Strike, teargassing clashes continue in Pulwama | | | SRINAGAR, Nov 25 : Tension gripped south Kashmir’s Pulwama township for the third consecutive day today due to a strike against the power shortage.
Youth throughout the day clashed with police in many markets of the town. Police resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the stone pelting youth. Several persons and two police policemen including SHO were injured in the clashes.
The Coordination Committee Pulwama, an amalgam of different trade unions of the town had called for strike in the town on Friday against the power shortage. The CC extended its strike call by a day following deadlock in the talks between them and the chief engineer.
Youth during the chief ministers visit to the town yesterday resorted to stone pelting at police and para-military forces leading to the fierce clashes between the two resulting into the injuries to several people
and the policemen. The CRPF men following the clashes allegedly beat up the people who were coming out of the mosque after offering prayers. A youth Noor Mohammad Wani, was allegedly critically injured
in CRPF beating. He was rushed to SKIMS for specialised treatment. However, the officials said that the youth was injured after being hit by a stone.
Though the CC, on the assurance of the chief minister, had called off its strike last evening but reports said that the youth without giving any heed to the CC for the third consecutive day today took to
streets and enforced shutdown. They broke the window panes of several vehicles which plied in the morning.
Reports said that the clashes between the youth and police continued throughout the day in the entire township. Police, reports said, in order to chase away the stone pelting youth lobbed scores of tear
smoke shells. Several persons and two police men including SHO were injured during late evening clashes.
Deputy commissioner, Pulwama, Shafat Noor, talking to Kashmir Times, said there is no issue in the town on which the shutdown is being observed. “On the very first day of the shutdown in the town I called chief engineer PDD who solved their demand at the very moment. Yesterday they met chief minister who also assured them of fulfilling all their demands. I have done all that they wanted. I fail to
understand the reason behind their protest,” DC said.
On the beating of Nimazis by CRPF last evening he said, “This is all baseless. A youth who was injured was hit by a stone.”
Meanwhile, president of the CC, Bashir Ahmad has appealed to the traders to resume their normal business by tomorrow. “We have not called for any strike tomorrow. We appeal to all the traders and shopkeepers to resume their business,” he said. |
