SPO injured in Pulwama attack

ANANTNAG, Oct 11: Unidentified gunmen on Thursday shot dead a former militant and Hurriyat activist, Tariq Ahmad Ganai in Meemander village of southern Shopian district while as the militants shot at and injured a Special Police Officer (SPO) in neighboring Pulwama district Wednesday night.
Officials and local sources said that a group of gunmen this afternoon took along a Hurriyat activist Tariq Ahmad Ganai alias Tariq Molvi and shot him dead at a little distance from his home.
Ganai, who had been recently released from jail was immediately evacuated to district hospital Shopian where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. As soon as the news about the killing of Ganai spread, locals said, huge number of people rushed towards his residence to participate in his funeral prayers.
Local sources said that as the funeral prayers of Ganai were on, a group of at least five militants appeared near the venue and offered gun salute to him.
The militants, they said, fired several shots in air and left hurriedly.
A police official said that they have registered a case and started investigations into the killing.
The killing of Ganai, a local said, created a state of mourning in the entire area.
Meanwhile, militants late Wednesday night fired at and injured an SPO at his home in Karimabad village of Pulwama.
Official sources said that the militants barged into the house of an SPO identified as Bilal Ahmad of Karimabad village and fired at him leaving him critically injured.
The injured SPO was taken to nearby healthcare facility where from he was referred to Srinagar hospital for treatment. Health officials said that Bilal had suffered severe bullet injuries in his leg and was referred to Bone and Joint hospital for advanced treatment.
