As reported, in a conference on Kashmiri Language – Opportunities and Challenges, held at Institute of Hotel Management Srinagar in the last week of October by the Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages Chief Minister of the State had sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for the Artists and Writer’s Welfare fund to help deserving artists and writers or their kin. Previously the Urdu fraternity of Jammu had desired that it is wished that the funds are “really” utilized to help the deserving artists. Inter-alia in the conference it was observed that it would be followed by a two day conference on Dogri in Jammu after Darbar move. Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather had said that preservation of the mother tongues of the state, especially Kashmiri and Dogri, had become the need of the hour and that the state government would initiate remedial measures.

Every dialect/language that is spoken in the country deserves special attention of the powers that be for its development and propagation but it should not be at the cost of the major languages. Not only in Jammu and Kashmir State but throughout the country, sub-continent and even in the world Urdu has its own place and at least is spoken and understood by majority of the people. It is reported to have the status of the third language of the world. In our state “unfortunately” it is constitutionally the official language but the treatment it had been given by various governments over the years had been highlighted by various organisations/individuals but without any effect on the persons sitting at the helm of affairs.

On various occasions, the concerned Chief Ministers/ Ministers/Bureaucrats had assured that considering the importance of Urdu in the state it would be given utmost attention that it deserves. Till date the words of the politicians, as per their trait, had not been put into action and Urdu continues to be treated as “untouchable” language. Notwithstanding the importance of the local dialects/languages it is the moral duty of the government not to underestimate Urdu that is binding the three culturally different regions of the state. If the Finance Minister had after all realised about the preservation of Kashmiri and Dogri what about the Gojri, Pahari, Ladakahi and other such dialects/ languages. And above all Urdu that had been mistreated all along under some well thought of conspiracy, perhaps.

On the World Urdu Day (Nov 11, 2012), the government was expected to atleast understand that unity of the state would get a set back if Urdu is tried to be neglected or ignored.

Dark horses may play spoilsport in straight contest
JAMMU, Nov 26: With just a week left for election to four seats of Legislative Council under Panchayat quota, the war of nerves among the key players has intensified across the state. Apparently the `full throttle’ one-on-one wordy duel presently on between the Congress-National Conference alliance, at present engaged in joint campaigning in `perfect sync’, and its main bete-noire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has given this important electoral battle a projection of “straight contest.”
