| | Death of pregnant woman: CJM sends accused 2 doctors to 7 day police remand | | | SRINAGAR, Nov 29: Two doctors, who were arrested by police, on charges of negligence that led to the death of a pregnant woman, were remanded to seven days police custody by chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Kulgam today. Police today produced both the accused, Dr Yousuf Ali and Dr Shugufta, before the CJM, Kulgam, and pleaded for their remand for the completion of investigations. CJM Kulgam accepting the plea of the police, remanded both the doctors to police custody, said the sources. “Since we cannot keep the accused in our custody for more than 24 hours, so we prayed for the remand of the two accused doctors for completion of investigations,” said SSP, Kulgam, Mohammad Shafi. He said that both the doctors are being questioned and investigations will be conducted fairly and seriously. Meanwhile, the inquiry initiated by the department into the matter has been completed by the inquiry team. “The inquiry team comprising of deputy director and joint director will submit its findings to the director this evening,” sources said. Director Health Services, Dr Saleem-u-Rehman, when contacted said that he will receive the inquiry report this evening. “The action will follow on the basis of the inquiry report only. We cannot be unfair to the patients. Whosoever is found involved, strong action will be taken against him,” director said. It may be recalled here that Sheeraza, wife of Mohammad Taseen of Kehi pora, was taken to Kulgam hospital on Tuesday morning after she complained of labour pains. However, the doctors on duty, Dr Yousuf Ali and Dr Shugufta, refused to admit her telling her that she was yet to complete her pregnancy period. At around 4 PM when the attendants of the woman forcibly entered the ward, the doctors referred her to Maternity and Childcare Hospital (MCH) Anantnag but she died on way to hospital. Her death triggered strong protests against the doctors. Following the protests, police registered a case against the accused doctors and arrested both of them. |
